Shedding Some Light
Red Dwarf's past comments on its future.
7 October, 2016
Elsewhere, we've been reporting on the rather excellent reaction that Series XI has had so far among fans and critics. But there was one bit of praise that came from an unexpected, but thoroughly pleasant, direction earlier this week.
John Pomphrey was the Lighting Director across the show's original run, and one of the few people to be involved in the production of every one of the first six series. With several decades of experience in the industry, John knows a thing or two about how to make good-looking television - and certainly good-looking Red Dwarf.
So we were delighted to see him pass on the following message to the new series' Director of Photography Ed Moore, in something of a passing of the torch (or, perhaps, of the halogen lights) from one generation to the next:
What can I say: [Red Dwarf XI] looked brilliant.
You captured the original look and style perfectly, and your control of contrast with lovely blacks and pools of colour with tightly controlled spill etc really suited modern TV styles, whilst, as I said, keeping the original Red Dwarf look!
All done in a small studio with as I observed, a tight schedule.
I really enjoyed the show's high quality production values and a funny modern script.
I hope it wins awards and that you will be kept busy until at least series 16.
Thanks, John! We're glad you're still enjoying the show after all these years.
