Twentica
Series XI lands on Dave!
22 September, 2016
There are two kinds of Red Dwarf fan: those who couldn't wait for the traditional broadcast of Series XI and so made their way immediately to UKTV Play last week; and those who could. And if you're one of the latter, then tonight is your night. Because tonight (22nd September) at 9pm, Red Dwarf XI comes to Dave.
The curtain-raiser to Series XI, Twentica, sees the Dwarfers find themselves in an alternate version of America, where technology is banned - making Rimmer and Kryten illegal! The episode is one of the most visually ambitious we've ever seen the show attempt - it was perfect fodder for all those theatrical screenings it's been having - and has already attracted widespread praise from early reviewers:
"An ambitious, great-looking and very funny series opener" - Den of Geek
"Hilarious as its golden days" - Metro
"An inventive series 11 opener that doesn't stint on the laughs... smart comedy" - Radio Times
"Firing on all cylinders... [an] ambitious, enjoyable opener" - Cultbox
"A typical high-spirited romp" - Chortle
"It's good to have these intergalactic reprobates back" - Beyond the Joke
"Red Dwarf is back, and it's better than ever" - Yahoo!
"Truly a brilliant piece of British Television" - Flickering Myth
"Classic Dwarf: solid sci-fi hook mined for loads of gags" - Cnet
"Smegging brilliant" - Digital Spy
"Back with an absolute bang" - The Inquirer
"Thought-provoking" - The Times
"The stories are still incredibly clever subversions of sci-fi tropes" - The List
"Bursting with ideas and inspiration" - Ganymede & Titan (fansite)
"Twentica is what the show can do when given the support, budget and expertise to deliver a proper realisation of Doug Naylor's ideas" - Gazpacho Soup (fansite)
Alongside the regular cast of Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn, Twentica also features guest stars Kevin Eldon, Lucie Pohl, Alexis Dubus, David Sterne, Susanne Braun, David Menkin, Sam Douglas, Kyle James and (returning from Series X, but not as the same character!) Rebecca Blackstone. It's a busy one, folks! The episode is written and directed by Doug Naylor, produced by Richard Naylor and Kerry Waddell, and is a Baby Cow and Grant Naylor production for UKTV.
You can get Dave in the UK on Freeview 12, Sky 111 or Virgin Media 127(SD)/194(HD); and in the Republic of Ireland on Virgin Media 122. There's also the timeshifted "Dave ja vu" an hour later on Freeview 79, Sky 214 and Virgin 211. And if you're watching live, do check in with us on Twitter, as we'll be sharing some of your best tweets on #RedDwarfXI throughout the broadcast! There's also a special fan screening event taking place in London, and we'll bring you news and images from that as it happens.
If none of the above options are available to you, meanwhile, then if you're in the UK you can still get the episode on the on-demand UKTV Play service. And what's more, you'll also be able to see episode two, Samsara, online a full week before it airs on TV!
So there we have it. New Red Dwarf is about to be all over your telly boxes. It's nice to have that feeling again, isn't it?
