Penguin Looking Drawn Dave Gibbons is a rare beast indeed. Like so many superheroes he has a dual identity - by day, he is a mild-mannered comic writer; by night, a fiendishly talented comic book artist. Mr Flibble tracked Dave down to interview both of him. |

Which do you prefer - do you prefer to draw or write?
It's a funny thing - what I should really be doing by now, if it wasn't for my natural caution, is writing and drawing my own stuff. But what I wanted to do was let my stories stand in their own right, in other words not say, 'As long as we get Dave's artwork, we're not worried about the story.' I wanted to feel that the stories were something in their own right.
But the thing I do find is when I write for any length of time, I get itchy to draw something, I have to draw something. And [it's the same] with the drawing as well. I enjoy them equally. Writing is more of a challenge. I've found that, in a peculiar way, writing has revitalised my interest in drawing. I become aware, when I'm writing descriptions for other artists to draw, of what is essential in a picture, and I'm kind of refining my approach to the artwork. They kind of feed off each other.
