Music

Despite Anita Dobson's presence in Psirens, her then-partner Brian May was unable to fit the role of 'Lister's hands' and the role was instead taken by Roxy Music's guitar diva Phil Manzanera. Craig strummed his own badly-tuned strings to create the ghastly chord in Legion, however.

Despite the loss of much transitional music (with the loss of Red Dwarf came the loss of it's establishing model shots, and shots of the 'Bug were more appropriate when accompanied by engine sounds), Howard Goodall managed to get yet more spooky and dramatic sounds into the sixth season, with Psirens and Legion both getting the background music treatment. Howard also created a refined, melodic tune to appear in Legion's breakfast scene.

Far more... well, apocalyptic, was the dramatic scoring for Gunmen of the Apocalypse. This highly-scored episode gave Howard a chance to stretch his homage muscles and he came up with fabulous mood music, backed-up by two superb themes - one a honky-tonk adaptation of the Red Dwarf theme, the other a dramatic, ride-into-the-sunset edition of the episode's own theme (which also contains refrains of the 'it's cold outside' classic tune).

But the key dramatic moment - the climax of the season - lost any hint of parody and went for straight drama. With the violin-like sounds quivering behind him, Arnold Rimmer charged down the corridor, bazookoid in hand, and was permitted one moment of heroism before Starbug was destroyed.
