Costumes
Aside from some hot new Cat outfits, the fourth series saw the main character's established costumes make a welcome return - although the hologram Camille was dressed in a red version of Rimmer's uniform. This move would prove prescient when Rimmer's own outfit was changed to red in the next season.
Elsewhere, mechanical outfits were the order of the day. A second version of a mechanoid, moulded to Judy Pascoe's body, was made up - complete with mechanical breasts. Lister was given a version of his own outfit combined with a Robocop-style mechanical side (and helmet). And Nicholas Ball's sinister simulant outfit emphasised the biomechanical, complete with glowing red eye.
But when Red Dwarf's main mechanoid became human, Howard Burden had to come up with the kind of clothing a robot would think was appropriate. He came up with a fabulously garish mish-mash of styles - having been cast in dull metal for so long, wouldn't a mechanoid ache to try something with colour and style? Of course, as with his approach to his own body, Kryten's interpretation of human nature is not exactly bang-on.
Still with the dressing of artificial intelligence, Holly did manage to add a fishing hat to her small ensemble. The intelligent Holly was originally intended to appear bald (a bald wig, obviously) and with small metal spectacles. Oddly, it was decided that Hattie looked altogether too good without hair, and so instead her hair was slicked back.
Given the prevalence for mechanoids, it's ironic that, with DNA set to close the season, Robert Llewellyn was expecting his time in the rubber mask to be over - the episode ended without restoring Kryten to his mechanical self. Robert did, at least get the DNA studio shoot to be free of the appliance, though.
Craig Charles was less lucky - undergoing a small part of Robert's trial for Justice. In order to create his space mumps, Craig had a cast made of his own head. The resulting mould was used to create (after several abortive attempts) the mumps, which were packed with foam and made-up to match the actor's skin-tones.
Hattie also managed to change, stepping out of the black box to play Mellie, complete with legs, in Dimension Jump. Ace Rimmer, meanwhile, got himself a stunning gold flight suit. Plus, of course, there were scores of outfits for Meltdown which had to mimic various celebrities (and Santa Claus) - all compiled at the very last minute.
