Costumes
Prepare yourself for a shock - Mr Flibble was only a stand-in. While the costume department scoured the shops for puppets, Howard Burden had a penguin glove-puppet knocked up for the rehearsals. But - as anyone could have told them - there was nothing to compete with the original Mr Flibble, and the penguin moved into the show, and into infamy.
Along with the new members of the team came a new look for two of the main characters. Rimmer's red costume - sparked by the Camille version in the previous series - was introduced, partly because the green was too similar to the colour of Starbug. (He did, of course, now match Red Dwarf - but the majority of the Dwarf's interiors weren't red, and the show was already branching away from its mothership.) His uniform badge was augmented with the character's name to make sense of a line spoken by the Cat in The Inquisitor. Rimmer also accidentally appeared in his old uniform - tunic off and braces out - at the start of that episode.
Meanwhile, Holly was given a change of make-up and a new video effect to make her seem more computer-esque - a technique not entirely dissimilar to the pixelating effect performed on Norman in Red Dwarf I, albeit somewhat more sophisticated. The reflective nature of Rimmer's holographic suit was mimicked and updated by Howard for the crew of the Holoship - complete with a snazzy H and holographic uniform badges.
The Inquisitor was given a deathly appearance to increase his menace, complete with a skull-like mask - which all of the cast had to try out for the justification sequence. Far less cumbersome were the outfits worn by Rimmer's two scantily-clad handmaidens - and the less said about the hooded hoards and their "unconvincing red eyes" the better!
The wonderfully OTT 'Rimmerteer' outfits came complete with floppy hats, and by this point Howard was delighting in the largeness of this season's style. The Cat got his most flamboyant costumes to date (including a yellow zebra-esque coat which the costume team spent days colouring in with yellow marker pens) and Rimmer was dressed up in a red and white check gingham dress... and army boots.
But for the very best in over-the-top chic you can't beat the evil crew. Rocky Horror influenced the bestockinged Rimmer, while Lister was given the cowboy look. The Cat and Kryten had their regular outfits exaggerated - the former with massive fangs and the latter with studs and a fabulous layer of gunge. Holly, too, was included - in a black wig, necessitating a white background for the character. It all makes the high crew's habits and silver forehead jewellery quite tame, doesn't it!
Finally, there was that episode, complete with that wig. Duane Dibbley emerged as a Red Dwarf legend with his Jerry Lewis hair. Indeed, it was new heads all round as Kryten had plates added to his head, Rimmer was given the look of Back to the Future's Doc Brown and Lister was made into a sharp city boy. No wonder they became suicidal...
