Production
If there's one production problem Red Dwarf II became famous for, it's the dilemma faced by a crew whose actors have left, despite having one more scene to film.
Picture the scene: a Welsh quarry. Celebration party scenes for Thanks For The Memory have been filmed when Craig Charles discovers his then partner is due to give birth to Craig's son. The remaining scenes featuring Lister all show him fully covered by a space suit, so, reasoning that the dialogue can be added in the dubbing suite, Craig is allowed to go. Mike Agnew steps into the scouser's space-boots... but unfortunately not into Lister's plaster cast. All the required scenes were shot, but the continuity error remained.
But it isn't just location shoots that become prone to such problems. When Clare Grogan was sent home by mistake, Dona DiSefano - wearing a very big hat - had to double for the actress in the final scene of Stasis Leak, with all the character's dialogue removed.
If the quarry was bad, the beach in paradise was worse. Rhyl's delightful seaside landscape did its best, but not everyone believed director Ed Bye as he confidently told the crew that he could make it look sunny in the edit.
For time reasons, Parallel Universe had to be broadcast without the title sequence, and was originally shown with no episode title at all. The dance sequence was choreographed by Queeg's Charles Augins (although removed sections meant that Rimmer and Lister jump from one side of the set to the other... but it's all a dream anyway, so that's okay). Augins required a huge amount of make up on-screen to prevent light from reflecting off his head.
