Music

Undoubtedly one of the most memorable musical sequences in Red Dwarf history, the guitar jam between "Hitler" and Lister in Cured could have turned out very differently.

Initially, the song chosen for the pair to perform was Toto's 1982 rock classic "Africa" - a track that has taken on new life in recent years as an increasingly popular internet meme. However, while the song's publishers initially gave Red Dwarf permission to use it, production made the mistake of going back and explaining that the performance would be by a certain A. Hitler (or, at least, a character thought to be him at that point in the story). Permission was promptly rescinded.

Various other options were explored, but the same wall was hit on each occasion. So instead, Doug turned to out-of-copyright options. "The Happy Wanderer", a German traditional standard with lyrics dating to the nineteenth century and a tune from the late 1940s, turned out to be arguably an even more perfect fit than any classic rock track might have been.

Another musical moment, however, was ultimately cut out of the series for time constraints - Siliconia was originally intended to end with a rousing performance of the oft-referenced, but never-heard, "Baby, Don't Be Ovulating Tonight". It was, however, included as a deleted scene on the home release.
